Why aren't we fighting to keep PE class in our school systems?
Did you know that there is no federal law requiring schools to have a Physical Education program? The funding for such program does not even exist. Most schools are cutting physical education altogether becasue of the lack of money flowing into our school systems. I am a little unsure why our country is removing Physical Education from the school's curriculum. Can somebody please tell me why the "fattest" country in the world would want to remove the one class that focuses on healthy living? Are we the "dumbest" country too? It is said that there needs to be more time to focus on subjects such as math and science because our country behind the rest of the world. In my opinion, we need to figure a way to find a balance. We can't be behind in academic advancement and be the fattest country as well. Our children depend on us to guide them in all aspects of life. Physical Education class is a way for children to release some of their energy in a healthy way that will keep them focused on their learning assignments in the classroom. Without physical education they will not be given the encouragement, support, or the information that can help them maintain a healthy lifestyle. We can not afford to cut this program. It doesn't matter if we excell in math and science if we can't live long enough to do anything with that education. If we are not teaching our children to be healthy and physically active in today's world, then we are just signing their death certificates for them at an early age.

I agree that we need to keep physical education classes in the schools. Not just because Americans are getting fat but because this also gives students an outlet to release built up tension, aggression and relieve stress also.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree, and I love the comment you made about us living long enough to do something with the education. Originally my major was Physical Education, but after I realized the trend of schools of getting rid of physical education programs I changed it. My hope is that this trend will reverse itself for the sake of the children. Without educating students about proper nutrition and exercise we are just going to continue to decline physically in this country. We are already the most obese, and we are doing nothing about it. Instead we are going to feed into the problem and not educate the future generations on how to properly care for themselves. This is a major problem, and definitely one of the biggest problems I have with education today. The importance of physical fitness reaches further than just releasing excess energy; it is central to the quality of life these future generations will have.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! We really do need to keep physical education in the school. It gives the children some time to release some of their energy that they have built up. This makes it easier not only for them but for the teacher as well. I also agree with how we are the "fattest country" and how ridiculous it is to get rid of PE if we are trying to fix this. I really enjoyed reading this.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree! It comes as a complete surprise to me that our Country is willing to drop PE courses as a requirement in our school systems. With all of the new found knowledge we now have about our bodies and health risks this generation is facing how in the world could we be considering doing away with Physical Education. I am even more shocked at this, because not only do we need Physical Education this is the time we need it the most. There is no denying that Obesity has rapidly increased in the past several years and has become an epidemic in our country. There once was a time when children played outside, rode their bikes, and climbed trees from dusk till dawn. However that is no longer the case. Let’s face it children of this generation are more likely to be playing Call of Duty for hours, or texting. The only real exercise our children are getting is though there thumbs, which will soon cause them carpal tunnel. Exercise used to be a part of child’s entertainment, and lifestyle now sitting on the couch watching over 300 channels, and surfing the web is what is done for fun. Exercise used to be something that was a part of a child’s daily routine and now it has become a chore. It is our job as the people of this country to let our needs be known and heard. Physical Education is something our children need, and something we should be willing to fight for!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. Everywhere you have information about how our country needs to get healthier. Yet we are cutting a class that is going to make our country healthier. This also helps with some kids who need to let out the extra energy.
ReplyDeleteI had no clue that there was not a law requiring we have PE in schools. I agree 100% that our school systems need to require students to participate in physical education classes. Physical education provides an outlet for so many students. It allows students to work on their hand-eye coordination, receive exercise that they might not get when they go home, gives information on healthy living, and releases energy from sitting in a classroom all day. Without physical education our obsesity level will surely increase and our academics will most likely decrease. Our education system is so focused on having the "highest" test scores, but are not focused in what is most important which is living a long, happy life for which we can use those academics. Being fit and healthy is shown to give us more energy and capability of using our brains, how can we get rid of something that can benefit us both physically and mentally?
